Sermorelin
The 1-29 amino-acid fragment of human growth-hormone-releasing hormone — the shortest portion that keeps the hormone’s full activity.
What the name means
Sermorelin is the assigned generic name for GHRH(1-29), the first 29 amino acids of growth-hormone-releasing hormone.
GHRH is the hypothalamic hormone that signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. The full natural hormone is 44 amino acids long, but researchers found that only the first 29 are needed for activity. Sermorelin is exactly that fragment — sometimes written GRF(1-29), using the older term growth-hormone-releasing factor.

Its single-letter sequence is YADAIFTNSYRKVLGQLSARKLLQDIMSR (amidated at the C-terminus). Unlike the CJC-1295 peptides, Sermorelin keeps the unmodified natural sequence, which is why it is so quickly broken down in the body.
Where it came from
It comes directly from the discovery of GHRH in 1982 and its later commercialization as a medicine.
Human GHRH was isolated in 1982 from pancreatic tumors that were driving excess growth-hormone production, work associated with teams led by Roger Guillemin and by Michael Thorner and Lawrence Frohman. Once the active 1-29 fragment was identified, it was developed into a pharmaceutical (sold under the name Geref) and gained U.S. approval for use in growth-hormone-deficiency testing and in pediatric growth-hormone deficiency. It was later withdrawn from the U.S. market in the 2000s as a commercial product.
Why it was created — the thought process
The reasoning was that the whole 44-amino-acid hormone was unnecessary if a shorter piece did the same job.
Mapping studies showed that biological activity lived in the front end of the molecule, and that the 1-29 fragment retained essentially full potency. A 29-residue peptide is cheaper and easier to synthesize than the full hormone, which made Sermorelin a practical way to deliver a GHRH signal for diagnostic and therapeutic use.
How it is made
It is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis.
The 29-residue chain is assembled stepwise on a resin (SPPS), amidated at the C-terminus, cleaved, purified by high-performance liquid chromatography, and verified by mass spectrometry. Because it reproduces a natural sequence, no unusual building blocks are required.
What the research actually shows — honestly
Sermorelin has a genuine clinical history, which sets it apart from many peptides discussed alongside it.
It was a regulated, approved product used chiefly to test the pituitary’s capacity to release growth hormone and, in children, as part of treating growth-hormone deficiency. Its practical drawback is a very short half-life — measured in minutes — because the natural sequence is rapidly degraded. It was ultimately discontinued as a commercial medicine, and it does not carry current approval for the general “anti-aging” or performance uses it is now often associated with.
