Pinealon
A synthetic three-amino-acid peptide from the Russian “short peptide bioregulator” programme, studied preclinically as a proposed neuroprotectant.
What the name means
“Pinealon” is a coined name that evokes the pineal gland and this family’s neuro-directed focus.
It is a marketing/laboratory label rather than a chemical acronym. Chemically the molecule is most precisely identified by its three-letter code EDR (Glu-Asp-Arg).
What it actually is
Pinealon is a synthetic tripeptide — three amino acids joined by two peptide bonds, about as short as a peptide gets.
The sequence is Glu-Asp-Arg (EDR). Reference databases give a molecular formula of C₁₅H₂₆N₆O₈ and a mass near 418 g/mol.
Where it came from
Pinealon comes from the same St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology programme, associated with Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues.
It belongs to a series of very short “Cytogen”-style peptides designed to act as tissue-directed regulators — here aimed at the nervous system. As with Epithalon, the evidence base is concentrated in this group’s output.
Why it was created — the thought process
The programme’s central hypothesis is that very short peptides can enter cells, reach the nucleus, and modulate gene expression in a tissue-specific way.
EDR was designed as a neuro-directed member of that series, intended to be studied as a neuroprotective bioregulator. It is important to flag that the underlying “peptides directly regulate genes” premise is a hypothesis, not settled science.
How it is made
Pinealon is made by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS).
Being only three residues, it is straightforward to synthesise; it is purified by HPLC and confirmed by mass spectrometry.
What the research actually shows — honestly
The available evidence for Pinealon is preclinical — cell-culture and rodent studies — and again comes predominantly from a single research group.
Proposed epigenetic and gene-expression mechanisms are hypotheses that have not been broadly confirmed by independent laboratories. There is no regulatory approval and no established clinical use.
