What the name means

“Epithalon” (also spelled Epitalon) is derived from epithalamin, a peptide preparation extracted from the pineal gland.

The pineal gland sits in the epithalamus region of the brain. Epithalamin was a crude pineal extract; Epithalon is the short, defined synthetic peptide developed to represent its proposed active core.

The sequence is Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). Reference databases give a molecular formula of C₁₄H₂₂N₄O₉ and a mass near 390 g/mol, making it one of the smallest peptides in this batch.

Where it came from

Epithalon is associated with Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in Russia.

It is part of a broader “peptide bioregulator” programme that began with organ extracts (here, pineal epithalamin) and worked toward short defined peptide sequences. This single-group lineage is important context for weighing the evidence.

Why it was created — the thought process

Pineal extracts had been reported to affect neuroendocrine regulation and aging markers in animal work by this group.

The design logic was to identify the shortest peptide sequence that could reproduce those reported effects, making a defined, synthesisable molecule instead of a crude extract. It was subsequently hypothesised to influence telomerase activity and gene expression.

How it is made

Epithalon is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS).

As a four-residue peptide it is comparatively simple to assemble; it is purified by HPLC and confirmed by mass spectrometry.

What the research actually shows — honestly

The most striking claims about Epithalon — telomerase activation and extension of lifespan — come largely from a small body of work centred on one research group.

That work includes rodent studies and some limited human reports, but it has not been independently replicated at scale, and the wider scientific community treats the longevity claims with caution. Epithalon has no FDA or EMA approval.
